A day after Iran targeted ‘terror bases’ in western Pakistan, India Wednesday stated that it understands “actions that countries take in their self defense” even as it maintained that it has an “uncompromising” position of “zero tolerance” towards terrorism

“This is a matter between Iran and Pakistan,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, while responding to media queries on Iran’s missile strikes in Pakistan.

“So far as India is concerned, we have an uncompromising position of zero tolerance towards terrorism. We understand actions that countries take in their self defence,” Jaiswal said.

Iran Tuesday targeted two bases of terrorist group Jaish al Adl in Pakistan’s Balochistan province with missiles and drones, its state media reported.

The action came after the group targeted Iranian security forces near Pakistan border.

In an escalation of tensions between the two countries, Islamabad Wednesday recalled its ambassador from Tehran and expelled the Iranian ambassador to Pakistan.

Islamabad has termed the strike as an “illegal and unacceptable act” and asserted that Pakistan reserves the right to respond, according to news agency Reuters. All ongoing and planned high-level visits between Pakistan and Iran in the coming days have been suspended, a spokesperson of Pakistan’s foreign ministry  has said.

In an earlier statement issued on Tuesday, Pakistan condemned the “unprovoked violation of its airspace”, and said the attacks had “resulted in the death of two innocent children while injuring three girls”. The statement by the Pakistani foreign ministry said a protest had been lodged with Tehran, and the Iranian charge d’affaires had been summoned to the ministry “to convey our strongest condemnation”.
